With at least a week of 19-degree temperatures, the water in the Roanoke Sound froze, solidly in the shallow areas.

This 54 foot whale was on the beach behind KMart, unfortunately dead. It took a few days to figure out what to do with the body, but warm temperatures hastened the decision-making process.
